Become a curator and host
Becoming a host for “The Distributed Exhibition” is your chance to be directly involved in an exciting new way to experience and interact with contemporary art. As a host you will be able to select one artist from a diverse and talented group to create a new work specifically for your home or office. Your space will form one part in a network of neighbors displaying the artwork produced just for them. Hosting is a great opportunity to make new connections with your neighborhood and the arts community of San Jose and contribute to local contemporary art.
The Distributed Exhibition asks: What might happen when art is created for a particular person, family, or living/working situation? What if private spaces became places for artistic display? What if the occupants became curators? What if the viewers became guests?
What a host does:
Between ten to fifteen private homes or businesses in the neighborhoods directly surrounding the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art will host the artwork in the exhibition. All artists will be creating new work inspired by each unique living or working situation. The resident or residents residing in each space will be responsible for curating the piece that goes into their house. Each host or host family will be presented with copies of all artists’ submissions, and from those portfolios, each will choose a single artist to work within their home. As a curator, you will have the opportunity to work with the artist to determine the format and placement of the final work. At the close of the show, the work will remain in your custody unless alternate arrangements are made. Sara Thacher and the San Jose ICA will facilitate this process.
Hosts make a commitment to be available by appointment to show the work situated in their space. The San Jose ICA will keep the appointment books and notify you when someone has made a date to see the artwork. As a host, you will be asked to specify periods of time during which appointments may be booked. Before the exhibition begins, you will be asked to determine a reasonable maximum number of visitors for each week. Sara Thacher and the ICA respect your privacy and will never publicly display your address or contact information.
